RASSA games were cancelled today preventing the league from celebrating its oldest player’s birthday! Larry Enzweiler added another year to his impressive total today. Larry modestly explained. “Like most people my age, I’m 85 today. Age is just a case of mind over matter—if you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter. My intention is to live and keep playing ball forever. So far, so good.”
Commisioner Tom Kilgorte gets up at the crack of dawn on game days to consult with Vestavia’s Parks and Recreation Director to determine what to do when the weather is questionable. It’s not always simply a matter of whether it’s actually raining or whether the RASSA fields are playable; if radar is showing thunderstorms in the area we also have to take lightning into consideration. A lightning alert sounds at the fields if lightning is detected within 10 miles in every direction and we are obliged by our contract to clear the fields and get under shelter if the alarm sounds, and to stay off the fields for at least 30 minutes. RASSA has players who drive an hour or more to play and while players enjoy visiting, it is frustrating to get to the fields and then not be able to play. Tom has to make the call without knowing what’s really going to happen. A day of rest never hurts.
