Red manager Bill Lovell wondered if he’d have 10 players by gametime. “We’re depleted. Wayne Pike had some organs act up and spent the weekend in the hospital. Mark Branin, one of the original RASSA players, fell off a ladder; I don’t know what he was doin’ but 78-year olds oughta think twice about climbin’ ladders.” Cecil Kwong subbed for Wayne and Red batted first with a full team. Jim Raley, Ron “Hootie” Ingram, Harold Finchem, Earle Dunn (back from his dog attack) and Bill Lovell got 5 straight hits and 3 runs.  Blue manager, Sid Hilton, had everything but a pitcher but Dale McWhorter filled in. Edwin Yergen singled, Ken Sransky walked, and Ken Aubin drove in Sid for one run. After the first inning it was a slugfest. Red scored 5 in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th innings as everybody in the lineup got hits and scored at least one run. Wayne Graham drove in 3 runs with an inside the park home run. Blue got 2 in the 2nd inning when CeCe Washington and John Remley drove in Dale and Rick Erdimer and then scored 5 in the 3rd and 4th innings to keep the game close. Harold Easterwood, Tom Wasmer, Sid Hilton, Edwin Yergen, Ken Sransky, Ken Aubin, Mike Richards, and Rel Underwood reached base consecutively in the 3rd, and David Brasfield, Dale McWhorter, Rick Erdimer, CeCe, John Remley, Rick Alston, Harold Easterwood, Tom Wasmer and Sid Hilton did the same thing in the 4th. Red 18, Blue 13 after four.

Both teams scored 3 in the 5th. Jim Raley singled, Hootie walked, Finch singled, Earle drove in a run with a single, Bill Lovell drove in a run with a fielder’s choice and Wayne Graham drove in the third run. Ken Sransky and Mike Richards singled and Ken Aubin walked for Blue and Rel Underwood drove in Ken Sransky but Ken Aubin got thrown out at the plate trying to score. David Brasfield singled and Dale drove in Mike and Rel. Blue shut out Red in the 6th with a double play and a grounder to second, and then scored one to creep a little closer. CeCe walked, John Remley singled and Harold Easterwood drove in CeCe. But the inning ended when Tom Wasmer hit a towering pop fly that came out of the sun at second base where it hit John Remley right on top of his head while he held on at second. John hit the ground holding his head and Jim Raley, who fielded the ball after it bounced 20 feet in the air, tagged John and forced out Harold Easterwood, who had been on first base, at second for an inning ending double play, although there was some doubt whether the play had actually occurred in that sequence. So Red led 21 to 17 going into the open 7th and scored 4 more. Hootie and Earle singled and Bill Lovell ran out a 3-run inside the park homer that featured adventurous Blue defense. Then Wayne Graham, Buddy Cannon, and Holly Whitmire all singled and Cecil Kwong drove in the 4th run to build the Red lead to 8. Earle Dunn pulled off a one-man double play at first for Red to start the Blue 7th, and Blue couldn’t score. Red won, 25 to 17.

Both teams hit well. Red batters were 36 for 49 with one walk for a .735 team batting average and a .750 on-base percentage. Earle Dunn was 5 for 5 and Hootie was 4 for 4 with a walk. Bill Lovell had 9 RBIs. Blue batters were 28 for 40 with 6 walks for a .700 team batting average and a .739 on-base percentage. Ken Sransky and Ken Aubin were 3 for 3 with a walk, David Brasfield, Dale McWhorter, John Remley, and Harold Easterwood were all 3 for 3, and CeCe Washington was 1 for 1 with 2 walks.

Green faced Sky Blue in the late game as the sun got higher and the heat rose. Gene Garcia got Green’s only hit in the first and they didn’t score. Sky Blue got 3 hits and 2 runs when Scott Wadsworth drove in Ronnie Muro and Clarence Kornegay drove in Scott. Green got 2 runs in the 2nd when Phillip Cheek singled and Carlos Davis drove him in with a double. Cecil Kwong drove in Carlos. Sky Blue added one second inning run when Jeff Tyler singled and Harold Hagler drove him in. Neither team scored in the 3rd or 4th innings and it remained Sky Blue 3, Green 2 until Green broke out with 5 runs in the top of the fifth. Carlos, Mike Madden, Cecil Kwong, Steve Entrekin, Larry Enzweiler, Pete Manown, Don Stuekler and Mark Lilla accounted for the runs with a string of hits. After shutting out Sky Blue in the bottom of the fifth, Green scored another 5 in the top of the sixth. David Ferguson and Bob Slanovits singled and Phillip Cheek drove in David. Carlos walked and Mike Madden drove in Bob and Phillip with a double. Cecil Kwong walked and Larry Enzweiler drove in Carlos and Mike for his 4th and 5th RBIs of the game. Green led 12 to 3, but Sky Blue came to life for 5 runs in the bottom of the sixth to get back in the game. Glenn Little and Chas Jones both doubled and Chuck Killough drove them both in. Dale and Ronnie Muro both reached base; Scott Wadsworth drove in Dale and Clarence Kornegay drove in Ronnie and Scott. Green 12, Sky Blue 8 after six. Green put the game away with 6 runs in the open 7th. Pete Manown, Don Stuekler, Mark Lilla, Gene Garcia, David Ferguson, Bob Slanovits and Phillip Cheek got a string of hits and Carlos closed out the scoring with a sacrifice fly. Duffy Vandeford opened Sky Blue’s 7th with a hit and Jeff Tyler followed up with another single but Duffy was stranded on third when Carlos caught Sid’s fly and threw out Jeff when he tried to go to second base after the catch. Green 18, Sky Blue 8.

Green hitters were 24 for 41 with 4 walks for a .585 team batting average and a .622 on-base percentage. Carlos Davis, Larry Enzweiler and Don Stuekler were all 2 for 2 with a walk. Sky Blue hitters were 16 for 35 for a .457 team batting average and on-base percentage.
