–FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—

May 27, 2025 (Liberty Park Sports Complex)

Threatening gray clouds hung over the stadium as players warmed up. Crashing thunderstorms had passed through overnight but the field was in pretty good shape and umpire Action Jackson yelled “Play Ball”.

Sky Blue batted first facing Red’s Earl Dunn on the mound. Bobby Watkins led off with a base hit to right and made it as far as third, but Sky Blue was scoreless as Earl got them on a fly ball, a grounder to John Woychak at second and a grounder to Sid Hilton at third. Red’s fearsome batters strode to the plate confidently and Dale McWhorter, Rel Underwood, David Ferguson, Glenn Little, Earl Dunn, Cecil Kwong and John Woychak all got on base on the way to a five-run start.

As Earl got ready to throw the first pitch of the second inning the lightning warning siren sounded and the players reluctantly abandoned the field as the clouds started to sprinkle. As players huddled under shelters a steady rain began and after consulting his weather radar, league commissioner Tom Kilgore called off the games as it became clear it was going to rain long and hard.

Players mingled, chatting as they gathered their equipment. Mike Richards sighed, “At least my strikeout won’t be in the record books.”  Handsome Herb told him there were easier ways. “I used to play lotsa sports without much success. Then I realized you can buy trophies. Now I’m good at everything.”

Herb continued. “We went over to a friend’s house for a Memorial Day feast yesterday and the woman cooking asked for peace and quiet in her kitchen while she cooked, so her husband took the batteries outta the smoke alarm.”
