Edwin Yergen told Handsome Herb he was dressed like a traffic cone. “Yeah, yeah,” Herb muttered. “I was gonna wear my camouflage shirt today but I couldn’t find it.” Bobby Watkins was warming up with Carlos Davis for the Green team’s opener against Sky Blue and told him about his latest trip to Las Vegas. “I was walkin’ down the street and saw a sign in a store that said “Help Wanted”, so I ran in and asked what was wrong.”
Sky Blue led off with 5 runs in the top of the first on a hot but dry morning. Edwin Yergen walked, Gary Singleton, David Riche, Sid Hilton, David Brasfield, and Ken Sransky got hits, Duffy V. and Wayne Sheets walked and Harold Hagler drove in the fifth run with a mighty blow. Then Harold held Green to one run. Mark Lilla and Gene Garcia got hits , but a fielder’s choice and a double play ended the inning. Sky Blue added 2 runs in the second on hits by Mike Bailey, Edwin and Gary, a David Riche RBI fielder’s choice and Sid’s double. Green scored 4 in the bottom of the second; Steve Entrekin singled, Bobby walked, Cecil Kwong drove in Steve, Joey Johnson drove in Bobby, Pete Manown drove in Cecil and Carlos Davis, playing his first game since having his shoulder repaired, drove in Joey. But Sky Blue scored another 5 in the top of the third to take a pretty big lead, 12 to 5. Duffy V singled, Ken Sransky doubled, Wayne Sheets walked and Harold Hagler drove in a run with another walk, Jeff Tyler drove in 2 runs with a double, and Edwin and Gary each drove in a run with singles on their third times at the plate. Meantime, Green, on a day when everyone on the roster showed up to play, hadn’t even made it all the way through their batting order once. They came up with 2 in the bottom of the third when Dinah Sewell led off with a double and David Ferguson drove her in with a single. Phillip Cheek singled and Larry Enzweiler drove in David.
Sky Blue’s bats went cold after the third and they never scored again. Green didn’t score in the fourth but scored 4 in the fifth to make it a 12 to 11 game. Doug Ferguson singled and Carlos Davis walked but Sky Blue got the next two batters out. Mark Lilla drove in Doug and then Gene Garcia hit a three-run homer. Green shut out Sky Blue in the open sixth and needed one run to tie, two to win. Phillip Cheek and Larry Enzweiler singled, Steve Entrekin drove in Phillip with a sacrifice fly, and Bobby Watkins drove in the game-winning run with a solid single to left. Green 13, Sky Blue 12.
Green hitters were 19 for 33 with 2 walks for a .576 team batting average and .600 on-base percentage. Mark Lilla was 3 for 3, Cecil Kwong was 2 for 2, and Carlos Davis was 1 for 1 with a walk. Sky Blue hitters were 18 for 31 with 5 walks for a .581 team batting average and a .639 on-base percentage. Edwin Yergen was 3 for 3 with a walk and Ken Sransky was 3 for 3.
Blue faced Red in the late game and outscored Red 3 to 0 in the first. Tom Wasmer singled and went to second on Sid Hilton’s single. Then Edwin Yergen hit a line shot to Jim Thompson at second base who caught the fly and also caught the runner off second for a double play, leaving Sid alone on first. After that, Ken Sransky singled and Ken Aubin drove in Sid and Ken Sransky with a double. David Brasfield drove in Ken Aubin. Then Blue shut out Red in the bottom of the first. Both teams scored one in the second. Cecil Kwong walked for Blue and eventually scored after John Kuklinski’s hit, Rick Erdimer’s walk, and Brian Gierlatowiec’s RBI fielder’s choice. Lisa Phipps, Wayne Graham and Holly Whitmire loaded the bases for Red, but only Lisa managed to score on Alicia Johnson’s RBI single. Then Blue opened up its lead by scoring 5 in the third and holding Red to 2. Tom Wasmer and Edwin Yergen singled for Blue and Ken Sransky drove in 2 runs with a triple. Ken Aubin drove in Ken Sransky, David Brasfield doubled, Rel Underwood drove in Ken Aubin with a single, Cecil Kwong walked and John Kuklinski drove in David. Jim Raley and Harold Finchem singled for Red and Jim Thompson (JT) drove in Jim. Lisa Phipps drove in Finch. Blue 9, Red 3 after three innings.
Red shut out Blue in the 4th. Brian G and Don Dietz singled for Blue but a strikeout and Holly’s catch at the fence closed Blue down. Keith Frederick singled
